Virginia’s Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment Rate Was Down 0.1 Percentage Point in September to 3.7 Percent (https://virginialmi.com/?page=3&print=1&release=261)
Never has it been more important for job seekers to get a professionally rewritten resume completed for their job search. Under the last president’s administration, employers were scared to hire or promote employees because they were unsure about the Affordable Care Act and its consequences on the bottom line. This fear of the results of lower profitability, greater overhead costs for healthcare benefits for employees, pushed employers to not hire or only provide part-time employment hours. This promoted unemployment at unprecedented rates of almost 9% in 2009 and it didn’t fall to under 6% until 2015.
Enter the new president, with promises to ‘fix the economy’ and unemployment had reached new lows for the first time in 17 years (2000; 4%). These means that companies have hired a growing work-force and expanded their personnel. Which also means there may be a shortage of highly qualified candidates on the market looking for work – and – there are less active job seekers on the market for recruiters to find and qualify.
What does this mean for the job seeker who is looking for a job now? Today’s job seeker must have a well-written resume; the resume needs to be rich – and concise – with the wording to showcase career achievements and accomplishments. The resume should include metrics to document and demonstrate ‘proof’ of what they have achieved. The resume must show diversity in skills and capabilities based on their technical skills, and where feasible, volunteerism, languages, publications, and awards and recognitions.
The job seeker should be careful when hiring a resume writer, also. They can be sucked into an expensive resume writing services with very little return on their career search investment. Some resume services charge over $1,000, and the result is essentially ‘a pretty resume’ with borders, fancy text, and filler words, but very little ROI, because it is loaded with subjective verbs versus objective descriptors. There are resume certification services that claim their resume writers are the best in the business – but those certifications are not necessarily important. And, you don’t necessarily need to meet face-to-face with those resume writers – that just makes you (the unemployed job seeker) spend gas and time that is not necessary.
You do want to use a resume writer with hundreds, if not thousands of resumes under their belt and loads of positive reviews and references. You do want to see samples of those resumes when you are shopping around. A professional resume writer will also explain the process to you, the job seeker, for what they will do with your resume. They will explain the process, the steps, and work interactively to reword and design the best-practices of the resume rewrite formatting. Good resumes service companies will offer smaller and affordable packages, so even if the job seeker is unemployed, they can afford the services (this means the resume writer is empathetic to the job seeker’s financial circumstances). You want to get a ‘good feeling’ from the resume re-writer’s personality, where you hear their empathy and just know they are on your side and will work hard to really make your resume shine to recruiters.
Job seekers also need to know a little more about the recruiting process and the resume writers need to know and understand the process in the 21st Century. Avoid any resume writer who states:
Statement 1:
You need to rewrite the resume for every job you apply for …
Rebuttal 1:
Not true, if you write a ‘capability’ resume, for all your skills, experience, strengths, and education, that one resume only needs to have the job objective title changed out for each job application.
Statement 2:
Resumes should only be on page.
Rebuttal 2:
Resumes can be unlimited pages if you are applying to a government services (GS) job; the recruiters for federal or state agencies are looking for the most qualified candidate in expeirence, which means you may need to ‘load’ that resume with far more content to really compete with the dozens or even hundreds of other competitors for those government jobs.
Resumes for commercial companies can be one page (if new to job market and fresh graduate) to up top four pages (if experienced careerist).
Why the ability to have 2-4 page resumes? Before the Internet of Things (IOT), resumes were submitted in paper form and the Federal Government mandated keeping those on file for two years for every job requisition. Lots of filing cabinets took up lots of office square footage. Now, all resumes are required to be uploaded to Automatic Tracking Systems (ATS), and digitally stored. And, now the recruiters can search that database of resumes in the entire database or only within the job requisition pool of applicants using Boolean Searches for the more vital key words in a resume and find the more qualified candidates in a few key strokes. They don’t care how long the resume is (now) because they let the search engine do the identification of the more qualified candidates and only need to glance over the resumes now for those key words when they open them for consideration to call for interviews.
